Welcome to the Site History of offthewahl.com, the official online home of Off the Wahl Productions.

For those interested, offthewahl.com is currently put together on an Apple 1.33 GHz iBook G4, with 1.5 GB of RAM, running Mac OS X 10.4.11. Other software includes Adobe GoLive 6.0.1, PhotoShop 7.0.1 and Illustrator 10.0.3; and Microsoft Office v.X 10.1.6. Additional tools of the trade include a Wacom Intuos3 6x8 tablet, Epson Perfection 2400 Photo scanner, a CanoScan LiDE 25 scanner, a Dell 1905FP 19” monitor, a Zerox Phaser 6130N color laser printer and a Motorola e815 cellular phone. Our site is hosted by DreamHost.

Version 1.5 [04.26.04 to 11.03.04]

A decision to rebuild offthewahl.com from the ground up in Adobe GoLive made it increasingly difficult to update Version 1, which was built in Macromedia Dreamweaver. When it came time to post the 2004 GNSJA winners, a single placeholder page featuring those results became the temporary face of offthewahl.com.

Version 1 [02.26.02 to 04.26.04]

After almost two years of foot-dragging, the first “real” version of offthewahl.com went online in 2002. While there were always plans to include some kind of online publication (titled either The Shooting Star or Cascadia Thirteen) and an archive of Andrew’s journalism work, Version 1 failed to grow much beyond its GNSJA pages.

Version Proto3 [Late 2001]

Proto3, which never went live, was primarily an effort to give the home page and main inside pages a less splashy, more content-driven feel. Beneath the surface, the site skeleton continued to evolve. Like Proto1, this version was going to feature three main modules, including an online version of Andrew’s newspaper, The Shooting Star.

Version Proto2 [03.29.01 to 02.25.02]

More a practical application of the site than a prototype, this version offered a link-rich syllabus for a Journalism 101 class Andrew taught at Wenatchee Valley College Spring quarter of 2001. It was also used to announce the 2001 GNSJA winners. Proto2 was the live face of offthewahl.com for the better part of a year, eventually being replaced by Version 1.

Version Proto1 [Early 2001]

This initial effort laid the groundwork for both the site skeleton and splash-style elements for the home page. This version, which never went live, was going to include three main modules: 1) the GNSJA; 2) an online archive of Andrew’s journalism work; and 3) a new version of The Shooting Star, Andrew’s self-published newspaper.

Pre-prototype phase [2000]

Shortly after establishing the offthewahl.com domain (on 02.27.00), we uploaded a “Coming soon” index page with our logo. It was there for a loooong time. At some point, we added three editorial cartoons as part of a software test. The exact date of these original uploads was not noted, but these four pages remained the live face of offthewahl.com until Proto2 went live. Most of 2000 was spent learning software, researching Web usability and design theory, and experimenting with different design motifs.
