At different points throughout its future, humanity recalls legends of Superman, champion of “truth, justice and the American way.” This anniversary issues – featuring an all-star cast of artists and several strong short stories from Elliot S. Maggin – earns a rare A+ grade.

Madame Xanadu helps stop a drug addict and a young woman experimenting with witchcraft from unleashing a pair of demons. Marshall Rogers art is stronger than Steve Englehart’s story, but this whole package is quite nice – especially the backup feature by J.M. DeMatteis and Brian Bolland.

The Shadow and his associates follow clues to thwart the robbery of worn-out currency making its way back to Washington, D.C. While perhaps not as strong as its reputation, this revival debut by Denny O’Neil and Michael W. Kaluta is certainly enjoyable.

A werewolf comes to town but soon runs afoul of a gunslinger who looks suspiciously like the Lone Ranger. This story-in-verse by Stephen Perry and George Evans leads off a hodgepodge of not-quite-ready-for-prime-time tales. Also featuring the first appearance of Mr. Monster by Michael T. Gilbert and William Messner-Loebs.
