Review: Bronze Age Minute typically focuses on superheroes and related fare, but an exception is being made for this Bicentennial-themed comic. As a whole, this collection recasts historical vignettes for amusement, but its comedy is surface level at best. In revisiting this issue 50 years later, the thing that stands out is how much shared backstory we’ve lost; young readers today would be unlikely to pick up most of the references to U.S. history. From the vantage point of the Semiquincentennial, the humor here is further undermined by a sense of melancholy brought on by our fraying national identity.
Grade (for the entire issue): C
Cool factor: Hey, kids!! History!
Not-so-cool factor: Was Jackie Jokers ever cool?
Notable: Also includes an uncredited contents page and a one-page Harvey bicentennial-themed calendar.
Character quotable: “How long will we submit to the unfair taxes were forced to pay?” – Jackie Jokers, standing in as Yankee Doodle Dandy
