Ms. Marvel #10
Published and © by Marvel, October 1977

Title: “Cry Murder – Cry MODOK!”
Synopsis: Ms. Marvel must stop MODOK and his ally Deathbird from taking over Skylab – and possibly the world.

Writer: Chris Claremont
Penciler: Sal Buscema
Inker: Tom Palmer

Review: This one seems to have it all: A.I.M. infighting! Maniacal Bighead and his pal, Ragey Hawkgirl! And, of course, our titular Kree warrior woman doing battle wearing hot pants, a scarf and Farrah Fawcett’s hair! It’s all … a bit silly. Worse, it’s unclear what the stakes are. Do readers care about MODOK’s latest plot for world domination (or is it the universe)? Or Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel’s internal conflict? Or the fate of Woman magazine? Writer Chris Claremont has yet to find his footing on this title, which often feels like a hodgepodge of elements from other, better books.

Grade: B-

Cool factor: There are better days ahead for this character.
Not-so-cool factor: And worse ones, too.

Collector’s note: According to the Grand Comics Database, there is a 35¢ variant and a 12p British variant of this issue. … According to MyComicShop.com, there is also a Mark Jewelers variant.

Character quotable: “Such a small thing, this cassette – yet it will give me a world to rule. And, perhaps, a universe.” – MODOK (that’s one powerful Walkman!)
