Review: Following their debut in Justice Machine Annual #1 (see review), the Elementals hit the ground running with this strong first issue of their own title. Bill Willingham is a ready-for-prime-time talent, offering up excellent Michael-Golden-esque artwork and strong story concepts. While the auteur creator wouldn’t take over as scripter until the second issue, it’s clear he’s already the driving creative force behind this series. Elementals is obviously influenced by Bronze Age superteam titles like X-Men, but also has a grounded-in-the-real-world sensibility that serves as a precursor to Copper Age books like Watchmen and Dark Knight. A strong start!

Grade: A-

Second opinion: “The story is good, the art is good. I think you’ll like it.” – R.A. Jones, Amazing Heroes #57, Oct. 15, 1984 … “This is a Marvel-style supergroup comic, and Willingham’s art is very Michael Golden influenced. … This one will last.” – Gene Kehoe, It’s a Fanzine #25, August 1984

Cool factor: Cool concepts, interesting characters and that iconic cover. Also, loving the PNW setting!
Not-so-cool factor: Bill Willingham’s penchant for cheesecake can be a bit much. Also, five inkers ≠ consistency.

Notable: First comic-book appearance of the Destroyers. (The supervillain team first appeared in 1982’s “Death Duel With the Destroyers” module for the Villains and Vigilantes role-playing game.)

Character quotable: “As for your beliefs … I suggest you try and accept a new degree of experience.” – Vortex, back from the dead
