Title: “Among Us Walks … Black Goliath!”
Synopsis: Luke Cage’s search for love interest Claire Temple takes him to Southern California – and into battle with Black Goliath.

Writer: Jenny Blake Isabella (as Tony Isabella)
Penciler: George Tuska
Inker: Dave Hunt

Review: Review: Ironically, this debut of a new black superhero to the Marvel Universe focuses less on race than gender as our male protagonists fall prey to the dudes-fighting-over-a-woman trope. Shared love interest – and future recurring character for Marvel’s Netflix series – Claire Temple is clearly the grown-up in the room (or circus tent, in this case). Still, the dynamics of post-divorce relationships are complex material for a mid-’70s comic and writer Jenny Blake Isabella navigates Claire’s emotional terrain well. The sparse, journeyman art – from George Tuska and Dave Hunt – adds little but doesn’t distract. A serviceable Bronze Age book.

Grade: B-

Cool factor: Expanding the roster of Black heroes was a definite cool move.
Not-so-cool factor: The manly midriff costume is rarely a good look.

Notable: First appearance of Black Goliath.
Collector’s note: According to the Grand Comics Database, there is a 8p British variant of this issue. … According to MyComicShop.com, there is also a Mark Jewelers variant. … Beware, this issue contains Marvel Value Stamp (Series A) #27 (Black Widow).

Character quotable: “I’m not here alone, Luke. I’m here with my husband.” – Dr. Claire Temple, dropping bombs
