Micronauts #6
Published and © by Marvel and © Mego, June 1979
Title: “The Great Escapes”
Synopsis: With the help of their Earthling friend, the Micronauts escape H.E.L.L. and get the Endeavor back in the air.
Writer: Bill Mantlo
Penciler: Michael Golden
Inker: Joe Rubinstein
Review: Michael Golden is a masterful comic-book artist. While well known for his covers, the Bronze Age star did a limited amount of interior art. This makes Micronauts a treat. Strong figure work, clean storytelling, and striking world-building and design; Golden has it all. Six issues in, it’s unclear if Bill Mantlo’s scripts will ever catch up. His characterization work is improving, but the Micronauts misadventures on Earth just aren’t that interesting. Things may pick up if the diminutive team ever makes it home to the Microverse. But, if they don’t, the artwork alone makes these early Micronauts an A-list affair.
Grade: A-
Second opinion: Recommended by The Slings & Arrows Comic Guide (second edition), 2003.
Cool factor: Two words: Michael Golden.
Notable: Also includes a Homeworld alphabet translation key developed by Michael Golden. … The “Micromails” letter column includes an LoC from future comic-book writer Kurt Busiek.
Character quotable: “We’ve been under attack since we landed on this world!” – Princess Mari
