Dennis the Menace Bonus Magazine Series #153
Published by Fawcett and © by the Field Newspaper Syndicate, June 1976
Title: “Yankee Doodle Dennis”
Synopsis: Dennis and his parents take off on a Bicentennial road trip to visit a few key locations of the American Revolution.
Writer: Uncredited
Artist: Uncredited
Review: While cover credited to Dennis the Menace creator Hank Ketcham, this uninspired road-trip tale is likely the work of uncredited ghost writers and artists. Unlike some surprising Bicentennial gems – looking at you, Life With Archie #172 – this one-off issue is an uninspired collection of historic facts and slight wordplay. It’s not particularly educational, nor is it funny. The story also lacks any sort of character arc; Dennis seems better suited to its traditional single-panel newspaper format. The cartooning here is on brand and professional, but this issue was never likely to be this reviewer’s cup of (Boston Harbor) tea.
Grade: C-
Cool factor: Not really.
Notable: Originally published at 1975’s Dennis the Menace Bonus Magazine Series #145.
Character quotable: “I think the ‘shot heard ’round the world’ just had a little echo in Dennis.” – Alice Mitchell, the Menace’s mom
