Title: “The Lords of Light and Darkness!”
Synopsis: A nuclear disaster at a secret facility unleashes a pantheon of Hindu gods – requiring intervention by Spider-Man and the X-Men!

Writer (plot): Bill Mantlo, Chris Claremont and Bonnie Wilford
Writer (script): Mantlo
Penciler: Sal Buscema
Inker: Mike Esposito

Review: This annual – featuring the earliest guest appearance of the all-new, all-different X-Men – wants to be better than it is. And it probably did read better back in the day. From today’s vantage point, though, the X-Men feel a bit out of character while the antagonists – lifted wholesale from the Hindu pantheon – feel culturally appropriated when grafted onto a multiethnic cast. On the art side, Sal Buscema’s always-steady pencils are fine but the finish work of Mike Esposito has everything looking a bit flat. Add in a conclusion heavy on pseudoscience and this who issue ultimately falls short of its aim.

Grade: C+

Second opinion: “Mantlo and company’s story is fairly pedestrian.” – Jim Beard, “Walking the Wider Web: A Fan’s Journey Through One of Comics’ Greatest Series!,” 2024

Cool factor: Bill Mantlo’s choice to use first-person narrative for the opening chapter proves surprisingly effective.

Character quotable: “Too much secrecy. Too many dollars. Too few people asking too few questions … and nobody getting any answers.” – Dr. Stephen Marchesi, dead man walking
