Title: “Happiness Is a Warm Alien!”
Synopsis: Alicia Masters’ art show is disrupted by a C-list trio from the Thing’s past – along with the Impossible Man.
Writer: Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio
Penciler: George Pérez
Inker: Gene Day
Review: A confession up front: This reviewer has always disliked the Impossible Man. And heart-warming, lighter-fare fillers have rarely been a favorite. That said, Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio’s attempt at a O.-Henry-style lesson in love isn’t all bad, even if it ultimately falls short of its aim. Of course, it’s gets a huge boost from the art of George Pérez and inker extraordinaire Gene Day. Pérez’s masterful storytelling is up to the task for both character moments and fight scenes, while Day’s penchant for detail brings a Terry-Austin-esque patina to these pages. Truly, the art is sumptuous.
Grade: B+
Second opinion: “Touchingly humorous. … Recommended.” – The Slings & Arrows Comic Guide (second edition), 2003.
Cool factor: Damn, Gene Day was a talented inker …
Not-so-cool factor: … who tragically passed far too young.
Notable: First appearance of the Impossible Woman. … Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio and George Pérez appear in this issue.
Collector’s note: According to the Grand Comics Database, there is a 12p British variant of this issue. … According to MyComicShop.com, there is also a Mark Jewelers variant.
Character quotable: “Ms. Masters, your work is phenomenal. The genre of superhuman misanthropy and megalomania is of particular relevant in our egocentric society.” – Unnamed art snob
