Our Army at War #295
Published and © by DC, August 1976

Title: “The Devil in Paradise”
Synopsis: After Easy Company takes a German town, Sgt. Rock ends up in a mano-a-mano battle in nearby woods.

Writer: Robert Kanigher
Artist: Frank Redondo

Review: While the cover hints at a Revolutionary-War story, this lead feature remains rooted in the World-War-II milieu. Robert Kanigher’s script mixes common themes – from the green soldier’s introduction to the unfairness of war to the moral gray of battle – but doesn’t explore them with depth. The art lacks professional polish.

Title: “Sgt. York: Medal of Honor”
Synopsis: A real-life conscientious objector goes on to become one of the most decorated soldiers of World War I.

Writer: Uncredited
Artist: Norman Maurer

Review: Despite its real-world origins, this story fails to explore why a soldier changed his views about the morality of war.

Grade (for the entire issue): C

Cool factor: The iconic Joe Kubert cover brings this issue’s grade up to average.
Not-so-cool factor: Said cover has nothing to do with this issue’s interior content.

Notable: This issue also includes a “War Games” one-pager by Sergio Aragonés.
Collector’s note: According to MyComicShop.com, there is a Mark Jewelers variant of this issue.

Character quotable: “R-Rock … Sergeant … 409966 …” – Sgt. Rock, man of few words
