Title: “Twilight of the Hunted!”
Synopsis: Doctor Doom struggles to bring Sub-Mariner to heel as the two race into conflict with MODOK – and the Cosmic Cube!

Writer: Gerry Conway
Penciler: Gene Colan
Inker: Mike Esposito

Review: While the previous issue of Sub-Mariner (see review) was a fine example of the middle of Marvel’s early ’70s lineup, the second installment of this three-issue storyline gets bogged down with odd character choices. Who is Cindy Jones and why should Sub-Mariner – or readers, for that matter – care? What’s up with silly, stereotypical drug dealer Brother Johnny? When did Doom pick up a trusted lackey named Franklin? MODOK has the Cosmic Cube and this is the best plan he can come up with? Hmm. Best to stop asking questions and just enjoy this still-fun ride.

Grade: C+

Brother Johnny
Brother Johnny, as drawn by Gene Colan and Mike Esposito in Sub-Mariner #48.

Cool factor: Still digging those Gil Kane “picture-frame” era covers.
Not-so-cool factor: Brother Johnny. Yikes.

Collector’s note: According to the Grand Comics Database, there is a 6p British variant of this issue. … According to MyComicShop.com, there is also a National Diamond variant.

Character quotable: “My good doctor will provide me with excellent sport – something most fitting with which to amuse the massive mentality – of MODOK!” – MODOK, big headed in more ways than one
