Title: “Nightmare!”
Synopsis: The Titans – along with new associates Terra and Frances Kane – square off in a rematch against the Brotherhood of Evil.

Writer: Marv Wolfman
Penciler: George Pérez
Inker: Romeo Tanghal

Review: If there’s one complaint about Marv Wolfman’s New Teen Titans it’s that the soap-opera aspects can sometimes bog the book down, as characters are too busy with subplots and dialogue to get to Big Superhero Punching. The writer playfully acknowledges that tendency in this story as the Titans are too busy talking to actually secure the villains they’ve just defeated. Even after that initial sequence, it still takes a little while for this issue to pick up the pace. But, once the main act commences, Wolfman and artists George Pérez and Romeo Tanghal deliver a healthy helping of superhero action.

Grade: A-

Cool factor: That opening sequence is sly fun.
Not-so-cool factor: Oh, Terra, you treacherous tart. It’s heartbreaking revisiting these issues, knowing where your story is taking us.

Collector’s note: According to the Grand Comics Database, there is a 75¢ Canadian variant of this issue. … According to MyComicShop.com, there is also a Mark Jewelers variant.

Character quotable: “So tell me, Bozo, am I Titans’ material or what?” – Terra, Judas
