Review: Bugaloos #1

Bugaloos #1 cover

Bugaloos #1
Published by Charlton and © by Sid & Marty Krofft, September 1971

Title: “The Groovy Girl”
Synopsis: Benita Bizarre poses as a guru to hypnotize the Bugaloos and force them to sing with her.

Writer: Uncredited
Artist: Uncredited

Review: The Bugaloos prove difficult to adapt to the comic-book medium. The popular Sid and Marty Krofft franchise was built around catchy music, a semi-psychedelic vibe and the charismatic, campy performance of Martha Raye as Benita Bizarre. Despite solid cartooning, the show’s core elements don’t translate well to this comic-book version.

Title: “The Old Switcheroo!”
Synopsis: In an effort to become young and beautiful, Benita Bizarre swaps bodies with Joy against her will.

Writer: Uncredited
Artist: Uncredited

Review: This body-swapping caper takes on a dark tone as Joy’s agency is stripped from her despite clearly articulating her boundaries.

Grade (for the entire issue): C-

Cool factor: Little Me was quite smitten with television’s “The Bugaloos.”
Not-so-cool factor: The comic-book version? Not so much.

Notable: Also includes a “Boners, Moaners, and Groaners!” text feature. (Guessing the language has changed a bit on that one since 1971.)

Character quotable: “Turn off the lights, Funky Rat, I’m going to turn on these Bugaloos!” – Benita Bizarre, eww
